Members of the Sunshine Coast’s multicultural community and sector are being encouraged to apply to join a key advisory group to help drive crucial cultural diversity matters and opportunities for our region.
Nominations to be part of the Sunshine Coast Multicultural Advisory Group (MAG), are invited.
MAG is an initiative of the Community Strategy2019-2041. Members will provide key advice to council on implementing the Action Plan objectives and providing consultation between multicultural communities, the not-for-profit sector and government agencies.
Community Portfolio Councillor David Law said he hoped to see applications from people with a wide variety of skills, backgrounds and networks.
“If you are a member of the multicultural community and live on the Sunshine Coast, you are welcome to apply,” Cr Law said.
“You may be a member of a community group, an academic or a service provider.
“We would love to hear from people who have experience working with multicultural groups and communities and are committed to making a positive difference for multicultural residents within our region.”
The Sunshine Coast is a diverse and dynamic society with many cultures, languages and faiths.
One in every five citizens are born overseas and our region is home to people from more than 150 countries.
The region’s multicultural citizenship continues to grow by at least 2000 people per year. The Coast normally hosts more than 3000 international students and welcomes more than 230,000 international visitors annually.
MAG members will form part of the second term of the group and help contribute to the Community Strategy Action Plan which hopes to achieve key outcomes including a healthy, active, vibrant and inclusive community.

MAG meetings will be held six times a year. Membership is voluntary and members are appointed for a two-year term.
Nominations close 13 July.
Knowledge/experience in the following areas is also desired:
· Health and wellbeing (empowerment, participation and resilience).
· Education (expanding knowledge, acceptance and recognition of diverse cultures).
· Economic opportunities (skills, employment and business networks).
· Racism and discrimination (diversity and inclusion strategies).
· Settlement (establishing, engaging and connecting new multicultural residents).
· Multi-faith and intercultural dialogue (encouraging intercultural connections and leadership).
· Cultural diversity and inclusion (building capacity, engagement and participation in community life).
